Hey there friend…

This is Emmett Drueding!

I’ve been writing, pickin’ and crooning tunes from my genre-bending catalog for over 20 years.

That’s right…

I will send you an autographed copy of my first CD, “Strange Bruise,” for just the cost of shipping … 5 dollars …

I’ve been playing guitar and writing songs since my early teens, releasing over five albums worth of original music. I’ve performed all over the country sharing the stage with folks like Tom Paxton, The Harmaleighs, Jake La Botz and more!

This isn’t my first go-around

But There’s More…

I grew up in Philadelphia with parents who were artists; so the idea of being one myself seemed as normal as any other blue collar job. My mother is a wonderful painter, and my father was a heralded guitarist and composer.

As a young person, my father’s music was the soundtrack of my home life. My father, Richard Drueding, would pick all day and night down his little office in the basement of our row-house. I look back and I  see how his routine rubbed off on me; now I’m the one picking tunes in the basement.

But it didn’t just happen on its own. In 2016, my father suddenly passed away and subsequently the guitars, the little basement office, and the nights that he filled with music went quiet. It was probably my own little way of feeling close to him, but in my dad’s absence I felt a strong sense of purpose from playing his guitars and creating in his space.

Since then, I’ve never looked back. I’ve dedicated my life to writing, playing, and performing music; it is who I am.

Now I’m a Walking Juke-box…

With an extensive repertoire of original music paired alongside my own arrangements of classic country, blues, and jazz tunes. One of my least favorite things to have to answer is what genre I fall under. I am a big proponent of making the music in your head; NOT recreating music that has already been made. My records have been characterized as music that “can’t be contained,” or “can’t be easily defined to one sound or genre.”

I love The Beatles, Elliott Smith., Howlin’ Wolf, Neko Case, Chet Atkins, Nat King Cole, Sonny Rollins, Morphine and so many more. My hope is that my music will please fans of those artists but I have no interest in copying any of them. I like the idea in film of the auteur: “a filmmaker whose personal influence and artistic control over a movie are so great that the filmmaker is regarded as the author of the movie.” I feel like this should be the goal of any artist, no matter the medium. I want to create a world for the listener, a world they’ve never seen.

For many years I would  try and describe my music to newspapers, blogs, and promoters in hopes of intriguing them enough to give it a listen. If I was lucky enough to get their attention then I’d be thrilled if they’d be willing to write something about me and share my music to their respective audiences.

This process, which all of us musicians have gone through, is a very odd way of trying to get acknowledgement from art. Often times you run into people who are very rigid about what they take in and then choose to share; always concerned about fitting into a brand or genre to create a level of expectation that their audience may become accustomed to. Doesn’t that just sound boring?

Instead, I think we want to hear music that excites and challenges us.

Some local artists that I follow have been taking a refreshing approach in connecting with listeners. Instead of the old way of sending a million emails out and just hoping that someone will take the time to find their way to the music, they cut out the middle man, and offer up free music directly to listeners via creative advertisement (just like how you’re here now).

My hope is to inspire you as a listener but also inspire you to find connection in your own art, without corporate, for profit assistance. Come on in and stay a while.
